Artist Statement
In A Few Words
My work explores deeply rooted cultural notions of femininity, spirituality, loss and familial memory. I like to explore the idea that traces of collective memory may be buried in our human consciousness and to recognize a history of common human expression that deals with nature, rituals, symbols, religions, myths, magic and human connections that can trigger responses of our participation in an ongoing journey.
I take cues from nature but rarely work from it directly.
My sources are either siphoned from memory or imagined. I intend for the pieces to be a little elusive, the way they might appear in a dream, imagined and transitory.
The monoprint lends itself to an intuitive approach. The immediacy of this method generates an energy and spontaneity that I find exciting and essential in my work. I also make use of collage by incorporating recycled prints, paper, fabric and other found objects, bringing together various elements, which reinforce the imagery.
